Integration of renewable energies in conventional production processes: Microwaves in the brick and tile industry

The Chair of Thermal Process Engineering is looking for a Master's student (m/f/d) in the field of drying technology with microwave energy of clay materials.

What to bring along:

  • Enrolled student of process engineering or similar
  • High level of interest in technical and practical work
  • Knowledge of drying technology and desirable knowledge of electromagnetic radiation
  • Ability to work in a team and German at B2 level

What to expect:

Collaboration in a research project that is looking for alternative and more environmentally friendly drying methods for the construction industry. Microwave drying is being scientifically investigated in order to ensure the future climate-neutral production of roof tiles and clinker bricks in Germany in accordance with EU standards. To this end, it is necessary to intensify existing research through further experiments.

Experiments are to be carried out under supervision on a microwave system modified for brick drying in order to optimize the energy application. In addition, drying simulations with COMSOL will be carried out.

Tasks:

  • Literature research on microwave drying
  • Examination of the structure of an (industrial) microwave
  • Collaboration with workshops to create modifications to the system
  • Carrying out and evaluating experiments and simulations
  • Possibly publication of the work in the form of a thesis with defense
